Parking and Safe Travel

Lots are located on the north and south sides of Elmdale Public School. Parking spots are insufficient, numbered and are reserved for staff until 3:30 daily. Do not park in the parking lots on Iona or Java – or even pull in to drop off children.

PARKING AND DROP-OFF PRIMER FOR ELMDALE PARENTS

Elmdale’s school travel planning committee works with students, parents, Elmdale staff and community partners to promote safe, active and planet-friendly ways for kids to get to and from school.

Traffic and congestion are on the rise in our community and around our school – especially at drop-off and pick-up times. It can be a hazard for students, and a nuisance in the neighborhood. Here’s a summary of the parking restrictions around the school, and some tips to help Elmdale students get to school safely.

Restrictions:

· Stopping (or parking) is not allowed on most of the north side of Java Street between Mayfair and Clarendon. No parking is allowed on most of the south side of Java on this block. These restrictions are in effect weekdays from 8:30-9:30 a.m., and again from 3 to 4 p.m. City bylaw officers enforce these restrictions, and the fine is $90-$110.

· Parking and stopping restrictions are also in effect on Iona Street between Mayfair and Clarendon, which is a school bus zone. There is no stopping at all on the north side of Iona, and a very limited area for parking or stopping on the south side. Avoid dropping your children on the south side of Iona if they will be crossing mid-block.

· Marked and enforced no-stopping zones nine meters on all sides of the intersections of Java and Clarendon and Iona and Clarendon are also in effect, and are needed so the crossing guard has a clear view of traffic in all directions. This also leaves very limited space to park or stop on Clarendon.

Crossing Guards:

Elmdale has guards at Four intersections:

-Byron Avenue and Clarendon Avenue

-Java Street and Clarendon Avenue

-Iona Street and Clarendon.

- Byron Avenue and Island Park

Crossing Guards will be on duty weekdays 8:30 to 9:10 am, and 3:20 to 4:00 pm.

Tips for Parents:

- Explore alternatives to driving, such our official Walking School Bus, or organize a walking group with other parents in your neighborhood. Elmdale’s school travel planning committee will be working to promote safe, car-free routes to school. Watch for more information, and get involved with the committee.

- Park and walk. Consider parking on the surrounding streets - not Java or Iona - and walking with your child; or simply dropping off older children. Only use the street parking on the south side of Java between Mayfair and Clarendon if you have very small children or other limitations.

- In the interests of promoting safe car, pedestrian and bicycle traffic flow and to respect the school’s immediate neighbors, please consider travelling only west to east on Java between Mayfair and Clarendon. Don’t use the driveways on Java to turn around mid-block.

Walking School Bus:

Walking School Bus is going great according to the Leader Catherine - no issues at all!

Registration is now down to 7 on the route.

No one on the waiting list.

Participation is good - generally 6 youth walking on average.

Ottawa Safety Council is going to be holding a Bring-a-friend on the WSB day in the new year - walkers can invite a friend/classmate (and their parent if they wish) that lives on the route to try it out and see if they like walking with the bus. Hope that this will add a few students to our routes that are under 10 at the moment.
