Our School

Elmdale PS
We acknowledge that our learning is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory. We thank the Algonquin Nation for hosting us and recognize their enduring presence on this land.

Our School

Elmdale Public School was built in 1928 and is nestled in an established residential neighbourhood. It derives its name from the abundant and attractive tree growth once prevalent on the school grounds. The original school structure was expanded in 1948 and again in 1972 to provide extra classrooms, a gymnasium and library.

Throughout its history, Elmdale has enjoyed a stable population and today has a number of second and third generation families enrolled in the school. Past achievements and present success are due to the efforts of students, staff, parents and the community working collaboratively to create a safe environment that supports and inspires learning and a sense of community.

Our Students

Elmdale Public School is currently home to 506 students, all enrolled in the Early French Immersion program. Students represent several countries and languages spoken include English, French, Chinese, Thai, Hindi, Japanese, Spanish and Arabic. Graduating students from Elmdale Public School, usually go to Fisher Park/Summit Alternative Public School.

Our Staff

Elmdale Public School has a talented and caring staff, whose specialties include English as a Second Language, French as a Second Language, Special Education, Reading and Music. The staff includes a mix of seasoned and new professionals who all work together on a variety of committees to promote student achievement and enhance school life. The educational team is led by a full time principal and half-time vice-principal. The non-teaching staff includes a full-time educational assistant, a part-time library technician, a chief custodian and 3 evening custodians, a full-time office administrator and a part-time office assistant.

Our Community

Elmdale benefits greatly from the energy and dedication of an active School Council and enthusiastic volunteers who collectively log thousands of hours annually. In addition, graduates, retired staff and community volunteers work with staff to support student learning and enhance programs. Elmdale houses a Mothercraft kindergarten and school-aged program in the building. On occasion, we make use of the wider community facilities such as the outdoor skating rink at Fisher Park or nearby Hampton Park. Various community organizations make use of our facility after hours.

“Our neighbourhood isn’t known by the name of a street or a shopping district. It’s known by the name of its school – a school that is the heart and soul of our community.”

Mission Statement

Elmdale embraces the Ottawa Carleton District School Board mission of “Educating for success-inspiring learning and building citizenship.”
