About Our School

Elmdale Public School was built in 1928 and is nestled in an established residential neighbourhood. It derives its name from the abundant and attractive tree growth once prevalent on the school grounds.
Throughout its history, Elmdale has enjoyed a stable population and today has a number of second and third generation families enrolled in the school. Past achievements and present success are due to the efforts of students, staff, parents and the community working collaboratively to create a safe environment that supports and inspires learning and a sense of community.

Students

Our school has a diverse community of students, representing many cultures and languages. Activities are planned throughout the school year where students from all grades have opportunities to collaborate, mentor, and learn from each other. They gain leadership and teamwork experience by getting involved in student council, teams and clubs.

Staff

Elmdale Public School has a talented and caring staff whose specialties include English as a Second Language, French as a Second Language, Special Education, Reading and Music. The staff includes a mix of seasoned and new professionals who all work together on a variety of committees to promote student achievement and enhance school life.

Parents/Guardians and Community

Elmdale benefits greatly from the energy and dedication of an active School Council and enthusiastic volunteers who collectively log thousands of hours annually. In addition, graduates, retired staff and community volunteers work with staff to support student learning and enhance programs.

“Our neighbourhood isn’t known by the name of a street or a shopping district. It’s known by the name of its school – a school that is the heart and soul of our community.”

Academic Programs

We offer the following academic programs:

  • Full-day Bilingual Kindergarten (JK-SK): 50% English instruction and 50% French instruction.
  • Early French Immersion (grades 1-6): In grade 1, students receive 80% of instruction in French. In grades 2-6, students receive 60% of instruction in French.
  • “Booster” programs: Periodically available to selected students to address a specific skill gap.

Special Education and ESL Programs

Students with special needs (including gifted) are generally supported in the class by the regular teacher and depending on the needs, by an educational assistant or the learning support teacher. Educational assessments, monitoring and instructional support for teachers are offered by our full-time Learning Support Teacher.
